Halls of Torment: Premium is my tribute to the games of my youth. I have combined the genres that inspired me the most into a new mashup and have incorporated some mechanics from the “survivor” genre which have become very popular. The target audience is players that have some nostalgia but crave contemporary game play mechanics and love quick, addictive games.

The visuals for the game are most certainly inspired by the early 32 bit RPGs of the 90s, but they have been updated just enough to be purely a homage and look great. The ugly sprites set against backdrops of gritty and muted colors combined with tiny pixel tessellations all make for a good throwback. This aesthetic is useful to set the dark fantasy tone that permeates the levels.

Most of the gameplay is focused on casual runs but the challenge and change in each run keeps players coming back for more. Each run typically lasts about thirty minutes and is a good choice for players that have busy schedules. Each run puts the player in an unforgiving world and pits them against massive, wave-based enemy spawns. The gameplay mechanics are designed around movement and affording the player some position relative safety while the AI controlled enemies automatically attack whatever is closest to them. Players kill enemies to level up and gain points to purchase random skills and traits.

Old-School vs. New-School is a fun little game. It leans into a very enjoyable pick-up-and-play style while placing heavy emphasis on player customization. It may only have individual runs of a few minutes, but the character builds, class choice synergies, and insanely deep customization more than make up for that. Every run you take on is aimed at preparing the strongest character possible for the final boss who is ready to end everything in 30 minutes.

The game favors permanent player progression. While you do lose a run, you learn more about the meta and gather resources to prepare for your next attempt. This creates a fun trial and error system of the player learning the best item combos against different enemy types. The item and ability variability means no two matches will ever be the same.

As a premium game, this has everything you need for a full experience. It avoids pay-to-win title tropes of endless ads and energy systems. It also has a time limit to each session, but each session is complete and has a very satisfying narrative. It doesn’t overwhelm you with content like an open-world game that has hundreds of hours, but it does cater well to those looking for a brief but complete experience.

Optimized for Android 7.0 or higher, this title is far more technically performant than the competition and is available for download in a mere 747 MB APK. Recovery from APKs can be troublesome for players who don’t like dabbling with data files. Fortunately, that is not the case here. Your experience is better optimized for players to spend more time enjoying the action and less time traversing the rogue-like dungeon crawling mobile RPGs.

Each zone of the game world offers something unique to players. They range from challenging combat arenas to open wastelands. At a minimum, players must discover how to adapt their movement and the best strategies for engaging with enemies. Complex boss enemies are also dotted throughout the game world, and will force players to attempt to pick the game’s attack patterns in order to progress. Fortunately, even with the intricate nature of gameplay, the game manages to balance progression.

This game does an excellent job of bridging the gap of what it means to be truly epic. It is great for players and lovers of the ’80s and ’90s and the true bullet hell era of action games, and it will satisfy players wanting to take part in what the rogue-like genre has to offer. With great gameplay systems and retro aesthetics, this game has truly stood the test of time.
