Rusty Axe takes on the classic style of a hack ‘n slice rpg, with a focus on brutal and visceral combat with total monster elimination. The game offers a variety of lands to explore in different biomes, all filled with their own mysterious challenges. An important aspect of Rusty Axe is environmental adaptability. Players must learn to engage in variable and unpredictable environments with changing constraints or opportunities. The game explicates this process as a gradual hardening of the body to war and pain. It can also be viewed as a progression system that makes the protagonist increasingly resilient to the ongoing conflict.

To help with survival, the game offers 4 playable classes. Two classes are warriors and two are mages. Warriors are focused more on close-up combat, whereas mages control the battlefield using many damaging spells. Each class has their own unique skills and ways to deal damage, which plays a nice role in the strategic element of Rusty Axe.
