The primary goal of the game is to match three gems of the same type horizontally or vertically. When matched, gems break, and allow additional gems to cascade from the top of the grid, creating a new arrangement. The gameplay is built around this simple mechanic, but soon new layers and combinations are added. If multiple gems of the same type are matched, and four or more gems are connected in a line, the gems blend together to create a powerful explosion. This special effect overcomes levels with high block counts or low move counts because it clears more tiles and blocks than a standard match. If five or more gems are matched and an explosion is created, then an even more devastating effect is created, clearing the most tiles of any effect in the game.

Players will soon develop their own strategies for creating and extending combos in order to achieve high scores and to efficiently clear levels by creating explosions and clears for each individual move.
