In this game, players will experience an immersive side-story that follows the Collector’s summon, as he abducts superheroes and supervillains to a different realm called ‘The Battlerealm’. In Arena™, players will experience a Summoner vs. Grandmaster sort of combat system against the AI with additional cosmic threat supervillains. Contest of Champions is one of the largest Marvel Comics crossover games as it also merges the Avengers and X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Inhumans, and Defenders, alongside many other solo superheroes and supervillains.

As in any Marvel game, the class system is heavily present, as is the rock-paper-scissors system. There are six classes in total: Science, Mystic, Cosmic, Tech, Mutant and Skill. Science beats Mystic, Mystic beats Cosmic, Cosmic beats Tech, Tech beats Mutant, Mutant beats Skill and Skill beats Science. There are a lot of enemies that can be strong against you if you use a class that is disadvantageous to them. Combat in the Battlerealm requires swiping and tapping in particular spots to simulate the weapons within the game. Light attacks require right side tap, medium attacks require right side swipe, and for a heavy attack, you have to hold down the right side of the screen. Heavy attacks are even more helpful because they break blocks, but they leave the player open for even more attacks. For defense, holding the left side of the screen allows blocking to decrease the amount of damage the player takes. High level players utilize a technique called Parry, which stuns the opponent if they time a block just right. Other players utilize a mastery called Dexterity to swipe left to completely dodge all attacks and projectiles.

Every single character has their own Special Attacks that are broken into 3 tiers. Each tier of Special Attacks requires a certain amount of hits/damage in order to fill up the power bar. To get a champion to the next tier, players need to collect Catalysts, which are available through specific daily quests and Alliance events. Many operations in the game require players to use gold. As players reach higher levels, more resources begin to appear such as Awakening Gems, which players use to unlock a characters Signature Ability, a passive ability that can drastically change the way a character interacts with the game both in PVP and PVE.

The game has a solid lineup of game modes to encourage long term play. The main story is a long campaign that is split numerous ways and even further into chapters. Alliances give an opportunity to a group of 30 players to play together and engage in Alliance Quest and Alliance War.
